Making Good Choices to Improve Your Immune System

Written By Dr. Russ Mosher, DPT on January 20, 2021

Healthy Immune System Your immune system is your primary defense against disease-causing microorganisms. When functioning properly, it recognizes an antigen (or potentially harmful substance) and works to destroy it. The immune system saves information about the germ and how to combat it so that the next time that germ tries to enter the body, the immune system recognizes it and can fight it more efficiently.

There are times, however, that a germ gets through the defenses. It’s possible your body wasn’t prepared for that particular invader, or perhaps your immune system was in a weakened state. While there is no scientific proof that you can boost your immune system, making good lifestyle choices can positively affect your immune response.

3 Healthy Choices You Can Make to Improve Your Immune System

A healthy, active lifestyle leads to a balanced immune system, which can protect against infection more effectively. By following these three lifestyle goals, you can help keep yourself safe from germs and disease.

1. Maintain a Healthy Diet

Medical professionals have found a correlation between nutrition and immunity. An effective immune system needs regular, balanced nourishment. Make sure you’re eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and if you drink alcohol, consume in moderation. Keeping your diet on track can help ensure your immune system is alert and ready to fight infection.

2. Get Plenty of Exercise

Regular exercise provides numerous health benefits, but perhaps most importantly, it helps maintain a healthy immune system better equipped to ward off germs. Exercise also results in good circulation, which helps the cells of the immune system to move freely throughout the body and empowers them to work harder.

3. Follow Healthy Habits

Even the most basic good habits can result in improved general health and a balanced immune system. Avoid smoking to improve cardiovascular fitness, get plenty of sleep to keep your body prepared to fight off unwanted visitors, and wash your hands to minimize the risk of those invaders in the first place. Help your immune system to perform the best it can to help keep you safe and healthy.
