Balance Retraining Through Physical Therapy

Written By Dr. Russ Mosher, DPT on July 23, 2020

rsz physicaltherapyAround three million older adults receive treatment in emergency departments for falls, with over 800,000 fall-related hospitalizations each year. It’s estimated that one in five falls cause a serious injury, such as a head injury or a broken bone. A fall injury causes more than 95 percent of all hip fractures.

However, falls are preventable, and injuries can be mitigated. Balance retraining through physical therapy helps patients improve their balance, reduce their fear of falling, and improve their body’s overall physical function.

Where Does Your Balance Come From?

Three systems within your body can help you to keep a good balance and stay upright. These systems are:

  • The vestibular system within the inner ear
  • The visual system
  • The proprioceptive system in your muscles and joints

The vestibular system is located within the inner part of your ear. This system communicates the position of your head to your brain to help you maintain your balance. Damage or impairment of this crucial system results in conditions such as vertigo whenever you move your head.

The visual system informs your brain of where you are within your environment. If your vision is impaired and uncorrected, you may suffer balance or depth perception-related difficulties. Your proprioceptive system, specialized nerve endings in your tendons, muscles, and joints, tell your brain when and how to contract muscles and how your body is positioned.
